If you’ve never heard of the Relay for Life, let me tell you, it’s amazing! It’s an organized community fundraising walk that’s held all night long. Teams of people fundraise all year long in preparation for this event in which they walk around a track all night, taking part in activities that are designed to help raise money for the American Cancer Society, and honor those who have battled cancer. It’s a great community fundraiser, and a very moving experience.
So I spent this past Friday night at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood to help out. A couple of my gift certificates for massage were up for the silent auction; but the really cool part was setting up for chair massage at the event.
Jennifer (my friend and fellow massage therapist) and I set up our massage chairs near the track so that participants could come stop by for massage. We charged a dollar per minute, and all of the proceeds went back to the American Cancer Society at the end of the night.
It wasn’t as busy as we really would have liked, because a rainstorm blew through early on in the evening, and I mean blew through; one of the other team’s tents was blown up into the branches of a tree. That caused quite a few participants to leave during the inclement weather. But it was still an amazing opportunity, and we had a lot of fun talking with everyone that night, and sharing such a wonderful experience.
Have you been to a Relay before? What was your experience like? Let us know in the comments!
