In honor of Self Injury Awareness Day, I wanted to take a quick moment to speak of my own struggles with self harm as a teenager.
I spent the first few years of high school using self injury as a coping mechanism for my extreme depression and suicidal thoughts. I felt alone and out of control in a world that didn’t care about me, but through therapy have come out the other side a strong and healthy person. It’s now been over 9 years since the last time I injured myself.
I want you to know that there is help, and there is hope. I want you to know, as a massage therapist whose job it is to treat everyone and every body with respect, but also as someone who has been there herself, that I do not judge you. I do not judge your scars, or your wounds. If you come to me seeking human touch and compassion you will receive it unconditionally.
And if you are currently in a crisis, please text “Hello” to the Crisis Text Line at 741741. It’s free, private, and available 24/7 if you’re in need.
